What we collect, and why
Information you give us
Your email address, any name or billing details your payment method requires, and anything you write to us in support.
Purchases
What you bought, the amount, and the payment processor's reference. We do not receive or store your full card number, expiration date, or security code. Payments are handled by Stripe and PayPal; we receive only the confirmation and a reference.
Licensing and activation
Your license key, a machine identifier derived from your computer's hardware, the name your computer reports, its operating system version, the app version you are running, and activation timestamps. This is what binds a license to a machine, keeps activation counts honest, and lets us tell you which of your computers is which when you need to release one.
Usage of the software
We record how many rolls, conversions, and sampler runs your account uses each day. On metered plans this is what enforces the daily allowance; on unlimited plans it is kept so that usage figures are complete rather than counting only people who are not paying us.
We also record when your account last performed one of those actions, and when your app last contacted our server. This lets us see whether a customer is actively using the software right now — it is how support can tell "the app is not running" apart from "the app is running and something is wrong." It is a timestamp, not a log of what you made.
Your plug-ins
The Plugin Randomizer works entirely on your computer. It ships with the plug-in data it needs, so it does not measure your plug-ins, and it does not send us anything about them — not which plug-ins you own, not their settings, not their presets, not their serial numbers.
Patches you create
Every patch you roll is saved to your account on our server, on every plan. This is what makes your library survive a reinstall, appear on your other computers, and carry across between the app and the browser Studio. A patch is a small block of synthesizer parameter data (SysEx) — it contains no audio and nothing about you.
We also keep a copy of these on the server's own storage as a backup, so that a database problem cannot cost you your work. Both copies are private to your account and are not shared with anyone.
Expansions you publish
If you publish an expansion to the Community tab or the Shop, then the presets it contains, its name, description, and cover art are stored by us and distributed to other users. Cover art is public — it is served to anyone with the link so that store listings load quickly. Your display name is shown as the author. None of this happens unless you choose to publish; expansions are private by default.
Server logs
Ordinary web traffic data: IP address, browser, pages requested, and timestamps.
Copy protection in the files you download
We want to be direct about this, because it involves your account.
When you download an expansion, the file is prepared individually for your account rather than handed over as a shared copy. Two things are involved:
- Inside the file is a short, digitally signed record containing your account number, which expansion it is, how you came by it, and when. It contains no email address, no name, and no other personal detail — the account number is meaningful only to us, because only our server can match it to a person. If a paid expansion turns up on a file-sharing site, that record is how we identify the account it was issued to.
- Stored alongside it on your computer is a receipt that records which machine the download was issued to, so the app can tell your own copy from one that was passed to you. Your email address appears in it only as an irreversible hash, never as readable text.
These files are also locked to the computer and account that downloaded them, which is why a copy moved elsewhere will not open. We do not scan your computer, we do not look at anything outside our own software, and we do not read your files.
What we do not do
- No advertising, and no cross-site tracking cookies.
- No third-party analytics that profile you.
- We do not sell or rent your information to anyone.
- We do not listen to or upload audio. The autosampler records on your own computer, from your own hardware and plug-ins, and those recordings stay there — they are never sent to us.
- We do not upload your preset files, or any third party's.
- We do not collect anything about which plug-ins you have installed.
Who else sees your information
Only the services we need to run the product: Stripe and PayPal for payments, our hosting provider, and our email provider for account and support messages. Each of them sees only what their job requires.
Other users see only what you deliberately publish: an expansion's name, description, cover art, and your display name.
How long we keep it
- Orders and licenses — for as long as the license is valid, and afterward for as long as tax law requires (six to seven years).
- Your patches and expansions — until you delete them, or until you close your account.
- Usage counts and activity timestamps — while your account is open.
- Support email — up to three years.
- Server logs — up to twelve months.
- Account details — until you ask us to delete them.
Your choices
You can ask us for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete your account and everything in it. Email us and we will do it.
Two things worth knowing before you ask for deletion. Expansion files already downloaded by other people are not recalled — they were issued under a permanent grant, and we do not reach into anyone's computer. And records we are required to keep for tax purposes stay for as long as the law says, in the order records rather than in your account.
Children
Synth2Software is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will say so on this page and, where the change is significant, in the app itself.
